Our Meetings Are Held Thursday Nights at 7:00PM at the Thurmont Scouting, Inc. Building, 26 Elm Street
Each Scout may open and maintain an account with the Troop Treasurer to deposit funds into for use towards camping fees or other Scout related expenses.
Fundraising is done at a troop level. Youth that participate in these activities are credited points based on their level of participation; this is often tracked by hours worked. These points can be used towards camping fees or other Scout related expenses as well.
Troop 270's policy is that we operate by the Patrol method whenever possible. This means that the Patrol will develop their own menus and buy their own food for the camp out. The Troop normally has the Patrols charge a standard weekend food fee of $20, although this can change if the Patrol decides to have a special meal which costs a bit more on a particular camp out. Normally though, the Patrol stays right around the $20 mark and it balances out from camp out to camp out. Usually there are no other costs associated with a normal camp out though certain camp outs may have special fees or charges. (Examples: a camp out to a State Park may require a $3-5 fee for the cost of the state camping fee; a camp out to Annapolis to overnight and see a Battleship will add the individual's share of the group cost since it’s a Troop function and not Patrol camping.) Scholarship funds ("Camperships") are available; application should be made to the Troop Committee Chairperson.
Usually $300.00 to $450.00 (but sometimes higher) depending upon the summer camp location and type. Generally summer camp fees are payable in two or three installments prior to the camp. Camperships (scholarships) may be applied for by February 1st of each year from the Troop Committee Chairperson. Also the Scout can earn money toward his Scout account with participation in Troop fund-raisers.
Costs are usually $500.00 to $3000.00+ (for older (14+) Scouts only). Scouts are expected to earn moneys toward their Scout account with participation in Troop fund-raisers. While the Troop does try to go to a High Adventure base once every 2 or 3 years, we also offer a regular summer camp experience that year to accommodate those scouts who cannot participate in the high adventure program.
The cost of Scouting tends to be significantly lower than many other organizations because of the volunteer work of many individuals throughout the Nation, the council, the district and in the Troop. Troop 270 does its best to keep costs, both for dues and for camp outs, as low as possible.
Scholarships are available for Scouts who do not have the resources to pay all costs associated with Scouting. It is Troop 270's goal that no Scout should miss out on the Scouting experience due to finances! Please see the section titled “Camperships and Financial Aid”.
Being THRIFTY is part of the Scout Law, which every scout promises to obey. We expect every scout to earn and pay his own way. Parents, please encourage your Scout to participate actively in our fundraisers. If you feel compelled to LOAN them money, please also provide them opportunities to EARN what they need by working around the house.
As of March 1, 2007, dues are $100.00 per calendar year; and may be paid quarterly at each Court of Honor. If you join the troop after the calendar year starts, subtract $8.00 for each full month which has passed. I.E.The scout joins in March, the assessment due is 100.00 - 16.00 = 84.00
