Special Events & Service Projects

Troop 270 participates frequently in special events, such as the annual Scouting for Food, Poplar Grove Service Project, Colorfest, Community Show, District Camporees, and our own Troop 270 campouts and treks. We also help out with the Cub Scouts and WEBELOS of Pack 270 with such things as hiking, camping and their annual Pinewood Derby race.

All the activities necessary to prepare for these events count as regular troop activities. Scouts are responsible for understanding all instructions pertinent to the event, and for working together to earn their way to these events.

Camping

Troop 270 participates in one or more resident summer camps each year. In recent years these have included Heritage Scout reservation in PA, Read Scout Reservation in the Appalachian Mountains of NY, Camp Roosevelt in Eddington, ME and many others.

These are traditional style camps, featuring patrol cooked meals and/or dining halls and many advancement activities. Summer camp is available to every Scout in Troop 270. This camp is very important, particularly to new Scouts, in that they are able to earn advancement and Merit Badges here that are difficult to obtain at other times. Scouts also learn many basic outdoors skills at summer camp.

High Adventure

Troop 270 Scouts are regular participants in "High Adventure" summer treks. One of these is usually to the Boy Scouts of America "High Adventure" facility known as Philmont Scout Ranch and attendance is subject to the rules set by the BSA (some are available only to Scouts over age 14).  Other Troop “Venture” class treks are also organized for the older Scouts (note: sometimes limited to First Class Scouts) and are typically a back-packing/hiking oriented trips.
